MANGALDAI: With only three days left for the Panchayat elections scheduled in Darrang on May 7 in the second phase, the BJP-led alliance’s campaign has reached its peak. Out of the total 12 Zilla Parishad seats in Darrang, BJP candidates from Rangamati and Hazrikapara-Kuruwa Zilla Parishads, along with 11 candidates from the allied regional panchayats, have won unopposed, leaving the opposition, particularly Congress, demoralized. Recent campaigns by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia at the Khatara Satra premises have made it virtually certain that the BJP-led alliance will dominate Darrang’s Panchayat Raj.

Significantly, the Congress party, disrupted by conflicts over candidate nominations, has been unable to mount an effective election campaign in the district, leaving both candidates and workers frustrated. In contrast, the AIUDF has continued its vigorous campaign in the minority-dominated Dalgaon Assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, the Raijor Dal has intensified its campaign in the Shyamtilla Zila Parishad constituency.

According to Darrang BJP president Mukund Dekha, despite the opposition’s lackluster efforts, the BJP has kept its campaign in full swing. The party is raising awareness among the public about how rural communities benefit from panchayats and the benefits outlined in the party’s manifesto for the next five years through its campaign. Notably, even in the minority-dominated Dalgaon constituency, the BJP-led alliance candidates have received overwhelming support from the minority community, as claimed by district media cell coordinator Chandan Saikia. Meanwhile, in Sherpur Gaon Panchayat one Congress candidate has resigned from Congress and joined the BJP.
