ORANG: An alleged physical assault on Baba Lal Das Tyagi, the priest of the historic Ram Janaki temple and Gaushala (cow shelter) at Shuklai, on July 14 led to a public meeting in Dimakuchi on Tuesday.

According to sources, the altercation took place when Nihir Boro, son of Khagen Boro, President of the RSS Dimakuchi branch and a long-time temple administrator, visited the temple for his regular prayers. An argument reportedly broke out between him and Baba Lal Das, who was having his meal at the time.

As news of the incident spread through various media channels, it sparked widespread curiosity. Law enforcement agencies and local organizations took serious note of the matter. The Dimakuchi police, led by Officer-in-Charge Suman Saha, promptly launched an investigation into the allegations.

To address the situation, a public peace meeting was organized on July 16 under the leadership of Lov Ram Boro, President of the Dimakuchi local committee of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU). The meeting witnessed participation from key organizations, including ABSU, Akhil Hindi Bhashi Yuva Chatra Parishad (Udalguri district committee), Shuklai Village Defence Party, as well as local intellectuals, community leaders, and police officials. In a significant gesture towards restoring communal harmony, a conciliation meeting was also held at the Dimakuchi police station. Both parties Baba Lal Das and Nihir Boro were brought face-to-face and their differences reconciled with the mediation of local leaders and authorities.

During the public meeting, Nihir Boro publicly apologized for the incident, admitting it was a mistake, and requested the people of Assam not to misjudge his intentions. “It was an unfortunate misunderstanding. I sincerely ask for forgiveness and hope everyone continues to uphold peace and unity,” Nihir stated.

Addressing the gathering, Lov Ram Boro urged the public not to be misled or divided over the issue. “Let us not misinterpret what has happened. Instead, let us remain committed to maintaining peace and harmony in the region,” he appealed. The peaceful resolution of the matter was widely appreciated by the attendees, who expressed hope that such unfortunate incidents would not recur.
