BAKSA: Issuing a 'war cry' ahead of the polls in BTR in Baksa district, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Ranjit Kumar Dass on Sunday announced that not less than 500 rallies would be held throughout BTR in support of the BJP candidates contesting the BTC polls.

Speaking on the alleged rift between the BJP and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass said, "We did not contest the Panchayat elections with the AsomGanaParishad (AGP) despite being their allies. Our alliance is for the VidhanSabha and discussions will be held to determine whether that will continue. The national leadership of the party will take the decision in this regard. In regional elections such as the BTC polls, the State-level unit of the BJP usually takes the decisions."

Dass said that in the ensuing days, the party workers would conduct 500 rallies in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). "People from all over Assam will participate in the rallies for our 26 candidates," Dass assured.

Dass again said that people in the BTR wanted the BJP to assume charge of the region. "They have seen how smoothly the Centre and Assam are being governed under the BJP. Therefore, BTC people want that same kind of smooth and hassle-free governance here," he said. The Assam BJP president further added that all the autonomous councils were under the control of the BJP and the BTC too would be ruled by the saffron party.

In the ensuing BTC polls, all the 40 elected seats in the Bodoland Territorial Council will be up for election. The elections were due to be held on 4 April 2020 but were postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The term of the current council was due to expire on April 27, 2020. After the expiry of the government headed by HagramaMohilary-led BPF, Assam Governor JagdishMukhi took charge of the council. The election will now be held in the month of December.
