Udalguri: Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika visited the Jalimukh area in Udalguri district on July 16 to inspect the progress of the ongoing flood mitigation project aimed at curbing seasonal floods in the region. Accompanied by party members and local residents, the minister assessed the developmental work carried out under the Water Resources Department.

The Jalimukh Flood Mitigation Project was launched two years ago to address recurring flood threats in Udalguri and neighboring Darrang district. The initiative involves the construction of a protective dam and the strategic cutting of river channels to divert excess water, especially that flowing from Bhutan into the Kulsi River. The uncontrolled flow from Bhutanese hills has historically caused destructive flooding, damaging crops, homes, and infrastructure in multiple low-lying areas during monsoon seasons.

During the inspection, Hazarika expressed satisfaction with the progress and reiterated the government’s commitment to flood management and rural safety. He emphasized the importance of completing the project on time to protect the livelihoods of thousands affected annually.

“This project is vital for the safety and well-being of the people in the region. Once completed, it will drastically reduce flood risks and ensure long-term protection,” Hazarika said during the site visit.

He also interacted with local residents, assuring them of continued government support and additional development initiatives tailored to local needs. The visit underlines the Assam government’s broader agenda to strengthen rural infrastructure and disaster resilience across flood-prone districts.
