SILCHAR: How pitiable can be the story of a school despite tall claims of the educational authorities of 'developed Assam and improved educational infrastructure'. The story of Raushanpur ME school under Sonai education circle would have remained untold if the students have not hit the streets and come to the doors of Deputy Commissioner of Cachar here on Thursday to narrate their plight. Can one teacher look after the interests of so many students?

There is total impasse in the school in the absence of suitable number of teachers. There is no proper teaching-learning process. Moreover, discipline is the first casualty. Nur Uddin Ahmed, president of the managing committee, came down to this town, 25 kms away, with a section of students and walked up to the office of the deputy commissioner to present a memorandum, detailing the problems being faced in imparting education to children.

Nur Uddin told the media how the school desperately needs proper number of teachers. He added to say in 2014, the posts of two teachers fell vacant. Thereafter, in succession four teachers went on retirement in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. He started as a teacher to retire in 2019. No teacher was taken against vacant posts. Only one teacher remains to serve against 6 teachers. Repeated memoranda and requests to proper authorities have failed to yield any result.

Nur Uddin said the fate of the school, the hope and aspirations of people of the areas and their children for better education, now hangs in balance. Students joining the voice of Nur Uddin in anguish asked how can one teacher teach them? "We come to school regularly to record our attendance, play around and go back home," they pointed out.
