HAILAKANDI: A residential colony under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Grameen (PMAY-G) is coming up at Panchgram in South Assam's Barak Valley. This will most probably be the first residential colony under the PMAY in Assam, stated a press release.

Disclosing the information, Chief Executive Officer, Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, Joydeep Shukla said the new residential colony would have a total of 14 PMAY houses. The residential colony is likely to be completed at the fag end of this month. CEO Shukla said that necessary arrangements were being done at the residential colony for the families.

The 14 homeless families allotted dwelling units under PMAY 2016-17 hail from Panchgram and Kalinagar areas. Each dwelling unit with toilet, kitchen and other facilities is built at an estimated cost of Rs.1.30 lakh. The ambitious project is being jointly executed by the Panchayat and Rural Development department and Hailakandi district administration.

Deputy Commissioner Megh Nidhi Dahal and CEO Shukla inspected the site about 25 km from Hailakandi town and took stock of the ongoing work, especially electricity and water supply. Dahal instructed the officials to expedite the construction work.

The officials also interacted with the beneficiaries and had a meeting with panchayat representatives and locals at the site. Local residents too hailed the government's move to provide shelter to the homeless families.

Launched in 2015, PMAY is an initiative by the Government of India to provide shelter to poor people. It has two components — Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U) for urban poor and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Grameen) (PMAY-G) for rural poor.
