MANGALDAI: The staff of Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) on Friday night gunned down one poacher in an encounter inside the park while his accomplices managed to flee away. According to the information, the staff of Kachomari and Chandanpur anti-poaching camp of ONPTR while carrying out night patrol duty noticed a group of poachers moving inside the park at about 2.30 am.

Though the staff ordered them to halt, the armed gang of poachers started opening fire upon the staff to which the staff retaliated.

In dawn, during the search operation, the staff found a dead body of a poacher was found lying on the grass with a single bullet wound. One machete and some dry food items were recovered from the spot.

Meanwhile, the body was sent to Mangaldai Civil hospital for the post-mortem. Though the poacher is yet to be identified, it is suspected to be Sabed Ali (35) of Dailmari village adjacent to Kachomari area of ONPTR.
