GUWAHATI: A joint team of Morigaon Police along with the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption arrested Senior Assistant Harendra Kumar Nath, Fishery Branch, O/O the DC Morigaon while taking bribe inside the DC Office of Marigaon.

Harendra Kumar Nath has been arrested on corruption charges.

Director of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption and Special DGP, GP Singh tweeted about the arrest of Harendra Kumar Nath on Thursday 18 November.

Earlier on 17 November, Sub-inspector Sudhanya Bhattacherjee of Hailakandi Police Station was caught by the Director of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption while taking bribes of Rupees 5000 from a person coming for a complaint inside the Hailakandi Police Station.

The accused sub-inspector had initially demanded Rupees 10,000 from the complainant for favoring the person in an ongoing investigation of the case under Sub-inspector Sudhanya Bhattacherjee. A case was registered against the sub-inspector at the Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The police officer was caught following a trap set by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption.

Corruption cases in Assam have been increasing as there are many other cases of taking bribes against various officials in the state. On 11 October a Mandal in Kokrajhar Revenue Circle Office named Moidul Islam was caught red-handed by Kokrajhar Police while accepting a bribe of Rupees 5000 and an amount of Rupees 41, 000 was seized from him.

In another case of bribery in the Rangia sub-division, a junior engineer named Bijoy Das has been arrested on the spot while taking a bribe of Rupees 10, 000 from a complainant. He was arrested following a trap laid by the team of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption. The initiative by the Assam police in cleaning the corrupt officials has led to the arrest of numerous high-ranking officers.
