Bongaigaon: The anti-CAB protests intensified in Bongaigaon on Wednesday. The picketers have called for another 24-hour Bongaigaon district bandh from 6 am of December 12.

Activists of AASU, KMSS, AJYCP and AKRSU took part in the protests. The protesters alleged that police had intentionally baton-charged innocent picketers who were protesting peacefully. The picketers had rejected to sit for a meeting with Bongaigaon district administration after this baton charge.

“The 36-hour Assam bandh against CAB by several organizations was going on when some picketers were physically assaulted by some miscreants in Palpara area of Bongaigaon. Just after this, all the organizations who called bandh had demanded for immediate arrest of Samrat Bhawal, president of All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation, who was supposed to be the main culprit behind this assault. They also threated 12-hour Bongaigaon bandh on December 11 if Bhawal was not arrested. Police finally arrested Bhawal on Tuesday midnight but released him on Wednesday morning. Supporters of Bhawal took out a rally in Bongaigaon town also after his release. Just after this the anti-CAB protesters gathered in Bongaigaon flyover and took out a rally. The situation became tense and police baton charged the picketers. Around 11 picketers were injured,” said Dipak Das on behalf of the picketers.
