SIVASAGAR: Along with the entire State, the celebration of Poshan Month-2021 and Matru Vandana Week-2021 was launched in Sivasagar district on Wednesday.

In a meeting organized by the District Social Welfare Department, in association with the Sivasagar district administration at the Sibsagar Girls' College Auditorium, Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal inaugurated the Poshan Month-2021 to be celebrated from September 1 to September 20, 2021 and Matru Vandana Week-2021, which is to be celebrated till September 7, by lighting lamp.

By launching both the programmes, the Deputy Commissioner urged to raise awareness about consumption of nutritious food with a view to ensure good health of children, teenagers and pregnant women through various programmes in the district. The Deputy Commissioner noted that it was important to provide balanced diet and nutritious food to children.

Mentioning that children suffering from malnutrition was a very serious concern, he urged everyone concerned to fulfill their duties and save children from malnutrition. He said that full cooperation of the public was very important in this matter. He urged people to concentrate on nutritional crops and fruits production by setting up nutritious gardens at homes or in the premises of Anganwadi centres, instead of buying fruits and vegetables grown by using various chemical fertilizers available from the market.

Focusing on the empowerment of Anganwadi centres, Dahal asked the Social Welfare Department to prepare a list of areas where there were no Anganwadi centres. The Deputy Commissioner said that the construction of Anganwadi centre would be completed quickly by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in those areas by next March.

In his speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that under the scheme 'Prime Minister Matru Vandana Yojana', financial aid of Rs 5,000 was provided to pregnant women or women who are already breastfeeding after giving birth to the first child.

District Social Welfare Officer Jyoti Bikash Dutta explained the purpose of the meeting and the Principal of Sibsagar Girls' College Buddhin Mishra presided over the meeting. Dr. Rita Barkataki, Professor of Home Science Department of Sibsagar Girls' College, Dr. Taslima Begum, Nutrition Specialist of Agricultural Science Centre, Sivasagar and Parismita Sharma, District Executive Specialist of Assam State Rural Livestock Abhiyan, Sivasagor also attended the meeting.
