LAKHIMPUR: The Assam State Outsource Power Workers' Union has demanded the Government of Assam not to hold any recruitment test for filling up the 5,000 posts lying vacant under the Power Department. On the other hand, the organization has demanded the government to fill up these vacant posts with the temporary workers who have been working under the Power Department without job security for years.
Notably, Assam State Outsource Power Workers' Union is the common forum of the temporary workers of the Power Department, working under Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) and Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL).
In a press release, president of the North Lakhimpur Electrical Circle unit of the organization said, "The temporary workers of the Power Department have been working for years dedicatedly to ensure the regular supply of electricity by ignoring torrential rain, scorching heat and violent storm, while repairing and reinstalling the damaged electricity lines. During the last COVID-19 waves, these workers had to discharge their duties by turning a deaf ear to the threat to their health in order to ensure regular electricity supply. Due to their contributions only, the Power Department has achieved the success of being a profitable department with a profit amounting to 300 crores. At present, a conspiracy is being hatched to terminate these temporary workers. The Assam State Outsource Power Workers' Union cannot allow it to be happened.""
Under such circumstances, the organization demanded the government not to hold any recruitment exam to fill up the 5000 vacant posts and to fill up them with the temporary workers without any condition. Otherwise, the organization will initiate a series of democratic stir until and unless the jobs of the temporary workers are secured.
