BOKAKHAT: For years, the residents of Nikorighat under the Kuruwabahi Gaon Panchayat and Elengmari under the Dichoi Gaon Panchayat in the Bokakhat legislative constituency have been urging the government to construct a permanent bridge over the Dhansiri river to connect their villages. However, their repeated appeals were long ignored by past governments and public representatives. As a result, the people were compelled to cross the river dangerously using boats.

In 2024, a local youth club took the initiative and spent several thousand rupees to construct a temporary bamboo bridge over the river, which helped ease the hardship of crossing. While that bamboo bridge provided significant relief, it couldn’t withstand the rising water level of the Dhansiri river and was eventually washed away by the strong current.

In light of the continuing struggles, the residents of both panchayats persistently appealed to the government and public representatives for a permanent bridge over the Dhansiri. Finally, in response to the relentless requests of the public and consistent media coverage, local MLA and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora took special interest and made arrangements for constructing a permanent bridge over the Dhansiri river.

As part of the initial steps, a team from the Public Works Department (PWD) came from Bokakhat and conducted a survey of the river area using boats. Soil testing is currently underway, according to sources. Upon hearing the news that a permanent bridge will finally be built connecting Nikorighat and Elengmari, the residents of both panchayats have expressed great happiness and excitement.
