RANGAPARA: A two-day national seminar on the theme 'Assamese Language and Literature: History of Self-Determination and Present-Day Challenges' organized by Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani in association with Rangapara College in Sonitpur district got underway from Friday.

The two-day long programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. Dhurjjati Sarma, Chief Secretary, Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani and it was followed by the opening remark by Dr. Ranjan Kalita, Principal, Rangapara College. In his speech, he encouraged extensive use of one's first language to conserve it from extinction. On the other hand, speaking on the occasion Dr. Sagar Boruah, president, Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani, spoke on the present-day challenges confronting a language.

The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Dilip Borah from the Department of MIL and Literary Studies, Gauhati University, who stated that nothing can save a language from extinction if the speakers do not take pride in its history and thereby apply themselves collectively towards its promotion and dissemination across the world.

Prof. Mukul Chakravarty, working president, Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani, also expressed his views on the conservation of a language from extinction. Pragjyotika, the annual journal of Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani, and Adhyanam, an edited book of articles brought out by the research forum of the Department of MIL & Literary Studies, Gauhati University, was also released during the inaugural session.

A total of 48 research paper-proposals have been received and will be presented by various teachers and researchers from various colleges and universities across the State. Dr. Aswini Kumar Deka, Head of the Department of Assamese, Rangapara College and joint coordinator of the seminar subsequently offered his vote of thanks.
