‘Primary education in Assam at square one’

GAURISAGAR, June 29: Despite providing all basic facilities like improved infrastructure, uniform, free text books, drinking water, Mid Day Milk (MDM) and other facilities from the government’s end, the quality of primary education is yet to take a positive turn in the last few years. This was stated by Prodip Hazarika, MLA, Amguri constituency on Friday while he was laying the foundation stone of 12 No Namdung LP school. The school has been shifted to the rear side from its original location due to four-lane high way extension.

Comparing the primary education scene since the days of Mahapurush Sankardeva, Hazarika said in the past only a single teacher covered 5 classes and that nowadays sometimes 5 teachers are available for 15 students and yet the quality of education has not improved. He even said that nowadays most of the head teachers of both the LP and ME schools do not attend class. The meeting was attended by Devajyoti Gogoi, Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO), Amguri, Deputy Inspector of schools Bhaskar Sarmah, social worker Prabhat Saikia among others. The meeting was anchored by former teacher Munindra Das while Manjit Phukan, headmaster of the school welcomed the guests and gathering. Earlier, Lakhani Das, wife of late Suren Das donated the land for the construction of school building in the memory of her husband and brother-in-law Suresh Das after demolition of the school building for four lane high way extension.
