MANGALDAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi by pressing the remote control button, ceremonially inaugurated the new cancer hospital here on Thursday afternoon.

The Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the Darrang Cancer Centre from Dibrugarh along with six other cancer hospitals in the State. Prior to inauguration, the district administration organized a public function at the hospital campus which was addressed by district Guardian Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, parliamentarian Dilip Saikia and Sipajhar legislator Dr Parmananda Rajbongshi.

The speakers in their speech termed the day as a historical day in the field of public health care service for Assam in general and Darrang in particular. They all hoped that the hospital would give relief to a large number of poor and needy cancer patients of the district and its adjoining districts, deeply reducing the transportation expenses, time and energy as a whole.

Earlier Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah delivered the welcome address. Bihu, Ojapali and 'Dhepa Dhulia' artistes also enthralled the public on the occasion. A joint venture of the Assam Government and the Tata Trust with an estimated overall cost of Rs 893 crore, the hospital is now ready to offer day care health care services, including Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, for a maximum of 44 patients at a time.
