KOKRAJHAR: In a sudden move, the central executive member of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), Kumar Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech was removed on Sunday evening for his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

In a press release, the general secretary of the UPPL, Maothi Brahma Hazoary said the central committee of the UPPL on August 30 evening unanimously decided for release of Dev Mech from all positions of the party for his anti-party activities and non-compliance with the party discipline. He said UPPL had released Dev Mech from all positions of the party for disobeying the party discipline. He also said the UPPL would not take responsibility for his activities from August 30 onwards.

Kumar Prithviraj Dev Mech and Thulunga Basumatary, an IITian of Serfanguri, were the intermediaries of the peace initiative with the anti-talk faction of the NDFB (S) as they were engaged to bring the leaders of NDFB (S) back to the negotiation table from Myanmar. The BTR peace accord between the Government of India, Government of Assam, four factions of NDFB, ABSU and UBPO was signed on January 27 in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, who also signed the MoS as eyewitness.

When the NDFB factions were formally disbanded after the accord, the leaders and cadres of the outfit became directionless and they failed to make up of their mind as to whom they should go? The president of the NDFB (S), B. Saoraigra, president of NDFB (D), Dhiren Boro along with their rank and file have started to join the BPF-led by Hagrama Mohilary while president of NDFB (P), Gabhinda Basumatary, which had the largest number of cadres, became part of the Promod Boro led UPPL. Meanwhile, founder of NDFB, Ranjan Daimary was sent back to jail after the BTR accord while his sister Dr. Anjali Daimary formally joined the BPF on August 24. Subsequently, many NDFB cadres and rank holders of all factions have joined either BPF or UPPL.

Kumar Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech joined the UPPL while his accomplice Thulunga Basumatary remained as supporter of BPF with B. Saoraigra. They are also the president and secretary of North East Heritage Foundation, an NGO formed by them. On August 29, both Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech and Thulunga Basumatary filed a PIL at Gauhati High Court seeking reply on the delay in implementation of BTR accord in the last seven months. They also cautioned in a press meet in Guwahati that the Bodos would be compelled to launch Divide Assam 50:50 movement in a vigorous way if the BTR accord was not implemented in letter and spirit as early as possible.

Perhaps, Dev Mech did not consult the matter with the UPPL before he filed the PIL in the HC. It is also learnt that in most of the cases, Dev Mech did not share what he wanted to do with the high command of the party.
