Goalpara: The Western Assam Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Rounak Ali Hazarika on Monday initiated investigation into the alleged assault on Goalpara district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Varnali Deka by two police constables of Goalpara Sadar police station inside a mobile theatre on Saturday night.

The DIG on Monday visited Goalpara district and began the preliminary investigation. The two constables have been identified as Kalyan Roy and Johirul Islam.

As per reports, Varnali Deka on Saturday went to watch the evening show of the Assamese mobile theatre Bordoisila being performed at the Goalpara College field. Reportedly, to enjoy the show in a homely environment, Deka did not take her security personnel. Her minor daughter had also accompanied her.

As she entered the theatre, she was obstructed by the two constables allegedly in an inebriated condition. When she tried to pass, they used threatening gestures and postures. After the DC and her daughter settled down in their chairs, one of the constables while passing them, allegedly stamped on her feet causing bruises.

The DC immediately took photographs of the duo and sent it to the Sadar OC, Dipul Tamuli. On Sunday, she lodged a formal FIR at the Sadar police station.

“If police are unable to protect a lady who is a DC, indeed themselves becoming perpetrators of assault, it bodes very ill to the law and order of Goalpara,” wrote the Deputy Commissioner in her complaint to the Officer in-charge of Goalpara Sadar police station.

On the other hand, the constables have lodged a cross FIR in the same police station. “The constables in their statements have complained that it is because that they did not salute the DC, she became angry and misbehaved with them. Even she kicked one of them,” said a police source.

Meanwhile, Goalpara Superintendent of Police Susanta Biswa Sarma said, “The matter is very serious. We have received complaints from both sides. It is being investigated by higher authorities. So, everything will be clear after the investigation.”

On Monday, several organizations like Goalpara Zila Xahitya Xabha, Citizens’ Forum, AASU and Goriya Moriya Deshi Jatiya Parishad came out in support of the Deputy Commissioner. “We decided to submit a joint memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking justice into the matter,” said Jitumoni Bhuyan, State organizing secretary of AASU.
