DOOMDOOMA: Leading businessman of the town as well as a distinguished personality of the Sonowal-Kachari community, Phani Bora died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh. He met with an accident on October 8 on the NH -37 near Dangri.

As per report, the Nano car that he was driving lost control and hit a tree on the side of the highway. Phani Bora was the proprietor of Bora Store, a leading modern garment store of the town. He was very popular for his amiable disposition. During the 80s he also tried his hand in music cassette production under the name and style of Mamata Bora Production and the audio cassette bearing the song Jur Moloya, composed and set to music by Pradip Dahotia and sung by Madhumita Goswami, became an instant hit and is still popular with the music lovers all over Assam. The song has been presented in remixed version by many musicians and singers, including Priyanka Bharali.

Bora also started a farm near Bhupen Hazarika Setu on the River Brahmaputra (Lohit) connecting Dhola and Sadiya and produced Rabi crops on a commercial basis to be sold in local markets at Dhola, Doomdooma and Sadiya. He visited his farm twice a day by driving his favourite Nano car. He was 72 and is survived by his wife Mamata Bora, two sons and two daughters. He was also a life member of Axam Xahitya Xabha. His death cast a pall of gloom in the town and was widely mourned by many organizations, including Doomdooma Press Club, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, Asamiya Puja Aru Natya Mandir Xamiti and Doomdooma Namghar Xamity. Although he had tested COVID-19 negative initially, subsequently he was found to be positive. So his cremation was done in Tinsukia under the supervision of the district administration.
