TEZPUR: In a significant development aimed at improving higher education infrastructure in the Naduar region of Sonitpur district, noted human rights activist Dr Parashmani Singha, son of the Late Dr Purna Narayan Singha, former Member of Parliament, submitted two formal proposals requesting the establishment of a Government Commerce College in Chowkighat.

The proposals were addressed to the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu. Submitted at the Chief Minister’s Office in Janata Bhawan, Dispur, the initiative sought to draw the attention of the state’s top leadership to the urgent educational needs of the region.

In the memorandum, Dr Singha highlighted that the Naduar constituency, particularly the Jamugurihat-Chowkighat belt, witnessed a sharp increase in the number of students completing secondary education and aspiring for higher studies. However, due to the absence of a government-run commerce college in the area, many capable and meritorious students, especially those from economically weaker sections, were unable to pursue tertiary education due to financial constraints and lack of accessible institutions.

Dr Singha strongly emphasized that a Government Commerce College in Chowkighat would serve as a critical resource for the youth of the region, enabling them to pursue career-oriented commerce education closer to home. “This initiative is not just about infrastructure but about empowerment. It is about giving the young minds of Naduar the platform they deserve to grow academically and professionally,” he wrote in the proposal.

He further added that the proposed college would not only support students in building their academic qualifications but also foster entrepreneurship, skill development, and employment readiness. “At a time when the government is promoting initiatives like ‘Atmanirbhar Assam’ and youth entrepreneurship, the presence of a government commerce college would directly align with the state’s vision for inclusive and holistic development,” Dr Singha noted.

The proposal also underscores the historical and cultural richness of Naduar, a region known for its scholarly traditions and community-driven initiatives. “Jamugurihat and its surrounding areas have produced many renowned academicians, bureaucrats, and professionals. The addition of a government commerce college will honour that legacy and carry it forward,” he said.
