SILCHAR: Barak Upatyaka Sangrami Oikhya Mancha, a recently formed platform of various local organisations, staged demonstration on Thursday in front of Mizoram Circuit House in protest against atrocities on the non-Mizo traders in Aizwal. In a memorandum to the Mizo Chief Minister Zoramthanga, the Mancha alleged that in recent times at 91 shops, owned by traders belonging to plains communities, were shut down by Mizo organisations like YMA and MZP and the businessmen had to flee from Mizoram and take shelter in Barak Valley. Though the local administration intervened to reopen the shops, the traders and their employees were scared to return to Mizoram apprehending similar attacks in near future, the memorandum stated. The Mancha appealed Zoramthanga to take steps for a meeting where the organisations from Barak Valley could directly discuss with YMA, MZP and other Mizo bodies.

The memorandum underlined that the people of Barak Valley had deep respect for Mizo culture, but it was seen that a section of Mizo people used to display hostile behaviour with the fellow plains people who stayed there for their business or profession. This practice could be seen even in the pre independence time and unfortunately continued till today.

Former MLA Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya, Aamra Bangali leader Sadhan Purkayastha, Congress leader Kishor Bhattacharjee along with representatives of various social organisations as well as traders’ associations took part in the demonstration.
