Protest against secret resumption of construction work in Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project

LAKHIMPUR: Alleging the secret resumption of the construction work in Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP), located at Gerukamukh in the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border area in Dhemaji district, the anti-big dam organizations in Lakhimpur resorted to strong protest against on Tuesday.

The activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding the issue in North Lakhimpur town.

The organization expressed strong resentment over the secret resumption of the construction work in LSHEP keeping the people of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts in the dark. It was alleged that the power generating corporation NHPC dared to complete the controversial big dam construction after getting the green signal from the Union Government. The organization warned that agitation programmes would be intensified against the alleged arrogant behaviour of the power generating company with regard to the issue.
