Protest continues against ‘killing’ of Gyanendra Rajkhowa in Golaghat

Local people demand arrest of DSP Partha Protim Saikia within 24 hours

GOLAGHAT: Tension still prevailed at Habial Gaon Dhekial under Golaghat district after an Ex-BSF jawan, Gyanendra Rajkhowa was allegedly killed by police personnel led by DSP, Golaghat, Partha Protim Saikia on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, local people of Habial village came out to the road and blocked the Golaghat-Dergaon connecting road by staging a protest at Ganakpukhuri demanding justice for the inhuman killing of Rajkhowa by armed police.

The agitators were seen raising various slogans against the police. Local people along with several organizations condemned the act of police. They slammed the police administration for shooting an ex-BSF jawan Gyanendra Rajkhowa like a dreaded criminal. People demanded stringent action against DSP Partha Protim Saikia and his team.

The body of Gyanendra Rajkhowa was taken to his home in presence of Superintendent of Police Manabendra Dev Ray, ADC Utpal Doley and Additional SP Dhruba Bora. But the family members and villages did not accept the body. They demanded the arrest of DSP Partha Protim Saikia within 24 hours, compensation of Rs 1 crore to the victim’s family and a government job to his wife. The brother of deceased Rajkhowa said that Golaghat police did not murder Gyanendra Rajkhowa, they murdered democracy. It was a very inhuman and very condemnable act of Golaghat Police, he said. In this connection, Nagen Rajkhowa’s father lodged an FIR at Dhekial police station and Debabrata Saikia lodged an case at the State Human Rights Commission against the act of inhumanity of DSB Partha Protim Saikia and his team.

On Wednesday, Gyanendra Rajkhowa went to the 1 No. Habial LP School polling station to cast his vote. In the voting station he was involved in scuffle with some persons. Later he came home and grabbed a sharp weapon and tried to attack voters in the polling station. Later a police team led by DSP Partha Protim Saikia along with OC Golaghat, Rupjyoti Duuta arrived at the spot and tried to control the person by firing blank shots. But Rajkhowa tried to attack the police team. The police shot him. He succumbed to his injuries in Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital.
