LAKHIMPUR: The contractual employees of Lakhimpur district under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department resorted to protest on Friday demanding their job security.

In this connection, they staged a three-hour long sit-in in front of the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad Office. The protest programme was organized under the auspices of Lakhimpur district unit of Contractual Employees' Union of Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) Department.

By staging the protest, the organization demanded the government to secure the job of those employees up to 60 years of their age, to manage ROP for every employees, to pay them salary by maintaining the equality of the job of other government departments, to provide them all government facilities and benefits and to appoint the qualified and experienced all contractual employees against the vacant post by holding departmental interview. In this regard, the protesters demanded Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's intervention at the earliest.

Notably, these employees have boycotted their services sine die from February 1 in support of these demands. These employees have alleged that they have been the victim of betrayal by the government with regard to regularization of their jobs and paying salary to them in the scale of regular jobs. In this connection, they have expressed vehement resentment over the alleged lackadaisical attitude on the part of the State Government with regard to securing their jobs.

The stir initiated by these employees from February 1 has paralyzed the machinery of P&RD Department in the district. There are 307 contractual employees in Lakhimpur district under P&RD Department working in nine Development Block offices and Lakhimpur Zila Parishad office.
