Protest in Lakhimpur against proposed Ordinance to set up MSMEs

LAKHIMPUR: In the wake of the Cabinet decision with regard to the Ordinance allowing land conversion for the setting up micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the State, the district of Lakhimpur was rocked with massive protest programmes against it on Thursday. The Ordinance is in favour of allowing the conversion of land for micro, small, and medium enterprises to set up industries on the basis of a self-declaration — without the requirement of any 'permission, clearance or licence' for three years.

The Lakhimpur district unit of Veer Lachit Sena, Asom (VLSA) burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowari to vehemently oppose the cabinet decision. The agitation was staged at the Court Tiniali of North Lakhimpur town. According to the organization, the cabinet decision was against the interest of the Assamese community and the ordinance was hazardous for the environment and nothing but a suicidal move. In addition to staging the protest, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding him to hold public talk before passing the allegedly irrational ordinance.

JAMUGURIHAT: The All Jamuguri Students' Union staged a protest on Thursday against the cabinet decision on ordinance for land policy and burnt the copy of the ordinance. The protesters shouted slogans against the Assam Government and demanded immediate cancellation of the cabinet decision. Dhuryat Goswami and Uddipta Kashyap, president and secretary of All Jamuguri Students' Union respectively, along with other leaders were present in the protest.
