Protests Across Assam’s Margherita Following the Suspected Rape and Murder of Minor

TINSUKUIA: Severe protests broke out across Margherita in the Tinsukia district of the state of Assam since the morning of Thursday after the discovery of the dead body of a minor girl on Wednesday.

The 12-year-old girl had gone missing on Tuesday and her body was recovered from the septic tank of a home in Jayanagar by the police, who sent the same for a formal post-mortem. But the incident sparked severe tension among the people of the region. Local people suspected one person to be the perpetrator in the incident and informed the local police regarding the same, but he remains to abscond from the police.

As the protesters grew in strength, the local administration had to deploy a large number of police personnel in order to control the situation.

According to reports, the deceased and her mother watched bihu celebrations at Margherita’s Rangamancha till early morning and stayed at the residence of one Aanan Tanti. As the deceased was still asleep when her mother wanted to leave for her home, she decided to let her sleep and return home later as they knew the family from before. After the girl failed to turn up at home, the mother registered a missing complaint on Tuesday, following which the details came to light on Wednesday.

The local police have already sealed the crime scene and taken the wife of the accused into custody while the search is on for the suspect. Members of several organisations burned tyres on the National Highway 315 at Ledu in protest of the incident and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.

He also appealed to the public to provide any information that they might have regarding the accused.
