Protests in Digboi; Tinsukia district bandh called on Dec 9 and 10

DIGBOI: Activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Digboi, took out a protest rally in Digboi on Saturday demanding immediate scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the greater interest of the Assamese people. The anti-CAB rally was supported by various local student organizations. Five of the protesters shaved their heads and sat in front of the Police Point to express their resentment against this move of the BJP government.

Joining the rally later, Jiten Dutta, pro-talk ULFA leader, said that mere demonstrations on the road would not bear the desired result. The people must choose to intensify their movement in a more rigorous format. Dutta also urged the indigenous people of Assam to immediately stop selling their land to foreigners.

Meanwhile, all the regional units of the Moran Students’ Union also conducted a bike rally from their respective areas and reached the District Commissioner’s office on Saturday afternoon, shouting various anti-BJP slogans on the way.

Declaring Tinsukia district bandh on December 9 and December 10, the president of the Moran Students’ Union, Arunjyoti Moran demanded the government to immediately accord ST status to the six communities of Assam. He further said that the movement this time would be accelerated with all vigour and might.

Meanwhile, the protest against the CAB spilled over various educational institutions also as students from various schools and colleges took to the streets to express their resentment against the government.

Earlier on Thursday, students and other socio-cultural organizations in Digboi jointly burnt the effigy of the BJP ministers of Assam on one hand while the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were hanged at Charali Police Point publicly in a separate agitation.
