TINSUKIA: The Orchid Society of Eastern Himalaya constituted its Assam Circle with new committee members at Ezengo near Roing in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. A public awareness meeting attended by local orchid conservationists was held with Prof Jintu Sarma Head of Botany of Gauhati University in the chair. Khyanjeet Gogoi, renowned orchid specialist while laying the objectives emphasized on the importance of orchid conservation. Addressing the gathering, noted conservationist Mridupaban Phukan as a resource person dwelt at length on the role and responsibility of all section of people in nature's conservation along with suitable safeguard to the orchids. Phukan also spoke on livelihood issues associated with orchid conservation. The programme was organized at the residence of Tine Mena, the first woman from North East who submitted Mount Everest.

Among those who addressed the gathering was Dr Runjun Saikia of Margherita College and Dipankar Borah of Goalpara College who suggested bringing out an information booklet on orchids in Assamese understandable to common people.

The programme concluded with the constitution of Assam Circle of The Orchid Society of Eastern Himalaya with Dr Jintu Sarma as president, Dr Debojit Deka as vice president, Dipankar Borah and Manas Pratim Dutta as secretary and treasurer respectively.
