BONGAIGAON: A tense situation developed in Bongaigaon town on Thursday regarding declaration of cemetery as containment zones. The situation turned worse when the public of Bongaigaon staged protest against Bongaigaon district administration by blocking a road with a body.

Recently, the Bongaigaon district administration had issued an order by which several wards of Bongaigaon town were declared as containment zones. As per order, it was said that the area would remain as containment zone until all people from the area went for COVID test and came out negative. The only Muslim cemetery of the town also came under this containment zone.

Local people said that some officials from the Bongaigaon district administration arrived in the cemetery on Wednesday evening and blocked the road with barrier. "We opposed it but they did not listen to us and blocked it. Today, an old woman named Zahra Bewa (75) died and we brought her body for burial. But due to the barrier we could not go to the cemetery and hence we protested there," said the local people.

The public blocked the road with the body and protested. Later, several high officials of Bongaigaon district administration arrived at the spot and withdrew the barricades. Thus, the situation was controlled. This incident created sensation among the people of Bongaigaon.
