Bongaigaon: An angry mob blocked the road after a retired teacher was hit by a stray cow and died in Bongaigaon on Thursday. Ratan Chakraborty, retired lecturer of Physics of Bongaigaon Polytechnic and a resident of Bylane 7 of Sati Jaymoti Nagar in Guwahati, was hit and killed by a cow. The incident took place in the TR Phukan Road of Bongaigaon in front of Raj Palace Hotel at about 2.30 pm. Just after this, the angry mob blocked the main road of Bongaigaon and complained against the alleged negligence of Bongaigaon Municipality. The people claimed that though street cows and dogs were the prime reason behind road mishaps in Bongaigaon town and stray cows had attacked people in the past too, no action was taken by Bongaigaon Municipality in this regard. People demanded that the street cows should be picked and released in the forest area.

Later, police officials, including Amar Choudhury, Additional SP Bongaigaon, and Dipu Choudhury, chairman of Bongaigaon Municipality, arrived at the spot and assured to make the town free of stray cows. After this, the public cleared the road.

Ratan Chakraborty was taken to a nearby health centre where he was declared dead. He had retired in 2018 and had come to Bongaigaon for pension and bank-related works.
