LAKHIMPUR: Public Health & Engineering Department (PHED) Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah attended the Jal Jeevan Sanmilan in Lakhimpur on Monday. The event was organized at Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town with the participation of all stakeholders like rural people, Jal Mitras, Jal Doots, consumer committee members, Panchayati Raj Institution members, SHG members, representatives of schools, Anganwadi centres, in a bid to keep the Jal Jeevan Mission functional for 30 years ahead. In the event, awareness was created on JJM schemes with the help of video, street plays etc.

Addressing the gathering, Jayanta Malla Baruah said, “The implementation of the JJM schemes in the State is proceeding with rapid progress. Till date, we, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, have managed to supply pure drinking water through tape to 53 per cent families, that is 35 lakh families of the State. In the post-independent period till 2019, only one per cent families of the State got pure drinking water.”

He further informed that implementation of a total of 1,445 new JJM schemes started in two PHED Divisions of Lakhimpur district with the investment of more than 1000 crores. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the package sanctioned to a single district. In the same event, the PHED Minister inaugurated 103 JJM projects virtually. The event was also attended by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, Bihpuria MLA Dr. Amiya Kumar Bhuyan, representative of Dhakuakhana MLA, JJM Coordinator- cum-PHED Secretary Kailash Kartik, Lakhimpur District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, PHED officers, district officers of the government departments and noted citizens.

Earlier Jayanta Malla Baruah visited Gobarishali Changmai Gaon to call on the family members of Pranab Saikia, the student of Tezpur IIT, who was brutally killed by two goat thieves on Friday night. He extended his sympathy to the bereaved family.

On the other hand, JJM Coordinator Kailash Kartik held a review meeting with the Lakhimpur district PHED officers and JJM scheme contractors in the conference hall of District Commissioner’s Office. The JJM Coordinator directed all concerned to complete the JJM schemes by September.
