GUWAHATI : Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, a retired judge of Guwahati High Court, has visited Mukroh village in Meghalaya, on the 28th of December, Wednesday.

The initiative has been undertaken by Assam government, to send a delegate and dig out the facts and circumstances that gave rise to the Mukroh firing incident, where 6 people lost their lives. State home and political department conducted the commission.

The probe panel arranged a public meeting, however, it was not fruitful as the public hearing came forward in a very short notice. It took place in the Inspection Bungalow located in Donkaukam in West Karbi Anglong.

As per sources, Karbi Students Association (KSU) appealed the commission to conduct another such public hearing, which will allow people to speak out, atleast those present during the time of incident. Various organisation representatives demanded to extend the public hearing.

They asserted that, the commission was set up in a very short notice, and time was not allotted to the eyewitnesses and organisations to share a word. The next date of hearing has been announced on 9th of January, 2023. However, as per sources, Mukoilum and Mukroh forest officials stated their views during the public hearing.

The episode took place on the 22nd of November, where five civilians from Meghalaya state, and one forest official from Assam died after clash broke out between the two parties.

Recently, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that, national media has misinterpreted that the firing incident as a result of the ongoing border dispute issue among Assam and Meghalaya. This particular thought is totally useless as the sudden and tragic incident doesn't have any relation with the border clash.

The violent Mukroh incident started when a truck was nabbed by the Assam police and forest officials inside Mukroh village, that was carrying timber. Villagers rushed to the spot and surrounded the team which led to the clash.
