BOKO: A sudden and unannounced closure of Chilarai Path near the Boko-Chaygaon Territorial Road Sub-Division Office by a contractor of the Assam Public Works Department (PWD Roads) has sparked anger and frustration among the residents of Boko. The road, which is a vital route for daily commuters, was barricaded without any prior notice or the provision of alternative routes or signage for the public.

Chilarai Path is an important 500-meter-long and 3-meter-wide road that connects the Boko-Chamaria road with the Boko Railway Station road. It also serves as a crucial link to several government sub-divisional offices including the Irrigation Department, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Electricity Department, and Agriculture Department. Additionally, it provides access to a pre-nursery school run by Boko Matri Samaj (Boko Mothers’ Society) and the Boko Girls’ School.

Residents of the area expressed strong resentment, accusing the PWD contractor and engineers of violating public rights by obstructing a key road without any warning. They pointed out that while local residents might know alternative paths to reach the offices, people from other villages—particularly those coming to pay electricity bills or visit the PHED or Agriculture Department—would be left confused and inconvenienced by the lack of guidance.

Locals also raised concerns about the potential consequences during emergencies, stating that the abrupt closure could delay access to essential services and potentially put lives at risk. They further criticized the PWD’s handling of the project, attributing the situation to the inefficiency of the contractor involved.

When contacted, PWD officials from the Boko Sub-Division acknowledged the issue and assured that they are looking into it. They stated that they will soon find a solution to ensure the public can access the affected offices and facilities without further disruption.

Despite these assurances, the public continues to demand accountability, stating that such negligence not only disrupts daily life but also reflects a serious lack of planning and respect for the public’s rights.
