Railway Protection Force of NFR rescues 21 trafficked persons in 6 days

GUWAHATI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway rescued 21 persons, including minors, during routine checking at different trains and railway stations over the NF Railway from July 17 to July 22, stated a press release.

Moreover, the RPF of NF Railway also rescued 189 persons, including minor children and women, during April, 2022 to June, 2022; whereas four persons were rescued from being trafficked. The RPF also apprehended four persons allegedly involved in human trafficking during this period. All of them were rescued from trains, railway premises and stations in different operations conducted over NF Railway.

On July 18, a sub-inspector along with a Meri Saheli team of the RPF post at New Alipurduar, while conducting a routine checking at New Alipurduar station, noticed a lady with a child and a male person at the waiting hall. On interrogation the lady stated that she run away with the male person. The said person assured the lady to marry her but later the lady realized that she might have been trafficked by the said person. Suspecting it to be a case of human trafficking, the detained male person along with the lady and child was handed over to Officer In-charge of the Government Railway Police (GRP), New Alipurduar, who in turn forwarded them to Officer In-charge of the Boxirhat police of that jurisdiction for further course of action.

In another incident on July 19, an assistant sub-inspector along with staff of RPF post of Dimapur, while checking at the Dimapur Railway Station, rescued two minor boys. Later, the rescued minor boys were handed over to Childline, Dimapur for further course of action.

In a recent incident on July 22, a sub-inspector along with staff of the RPF post at Kamakhya conducted a joint checking with the GRP, Kamakhya and personnel of the Jalukbari Police Station at Kamkahya Railway Station against human traffickers and anti-social elements. During the checking, they rescued four minor girls. During interrogation, the girls stated that they had come from Bangladesh through Agartala and came to Guwahati by bus. Later, arrangements were made to push back the rescued minor girls to Bangladesh for further course of action.

RPF train escort parties and staff deployed at stations have been alerted to be vigilant and on the lookout for suspected persons involved in human trafficking as well as the movement of children in a suspicious manner, travelling alone, without proper guardian etc. Efforts are being made by conducting regular checks, close coordination with NGO, sensitization of public etc., are also being carried out.
