Rangia Railway Police seized 282 cattle at Tangla

TANGLA: Acting on a tip-off, Rangia Railway Police seized a total of 282 cattle including buffaloes, calves and cows at Tangla Railway Station on Saturday. The cattle which were transported through railway carriages from Hajipur of Bihar were impounded after a NGO worker of Goalpara district filed an FIR with Dangtal Railway Station Police under Dhaligaon PS in Chirang district. The cattleheads along with the more than 50 traders were later sheltered at Bhootbangla crematorium ground in Tangla town of Udalguri district where the local citizens and Marwari Yuva Samaj members provided the makeshift tents and food materials to the bovines. Talking to The Sentinel, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rangia Railway, TrinayanBhuyan said, "We have impounded the cattleheads acting on the FIR received from an NGO worker registered under 429 IPC R/W Sec 11(1) (h) of Cruelty to Animals Act ,1960 and found that all of the bovines have been lawfully purchased with pre-requisite documents from Hajipur of Bihar but certain guidelines of Cattle Act were flouted as food were not being provided to the bovines during transportation and have sent the matter to court."

"Most of the bovines are dairy buffaloes and dairy cows and are brought for dairy farming purposes," said Rakibul Islam, a trader. Another trader named Sahidul Ali said, "Our calves have succumbed to death in the shelter due to the winter. Now who will compensate us for the loss. We are now waiting for the court order for the custody of our bovines."
