Rangia: In a joint operation conducted by Sasashtra Seema Bal (SSB) and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) under the guidance of HK Gupta, Commandant 24th Battalion, SSB Rangia and leadership of Inspector (General) Ranjan Kumar Bachar of Border Outpost Nalapara rescued a rare species of Pangolin in the Indo-Bhutan border. During this operation, a person named Tarzan Boro was arrested with the Pangolin.
The Indian Pangolin, scientifically known as Manis crassicaudata, is listed in the Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 and is also listed as endangered in the IUCN Red List. There are a total of 8 known species of the Pangolin found in Asia and Africa. It can range in size from 30 to 100 cm long and weigh up to 30 kg. It is poached extensively for its scales and meat. Its scales are used in traditional Chinese medicines. After the said operation, the person who was arrested along with the seized Pangolin was handed over to Forest Department of Borandi Wildlife Range, Rajagarh. During this campaign, Sub Inspector Bharat Hazarika, Assistant Sub Inspector Y Dolendra Singh, Head Constable V. Prabhu, Constable General Saurabh, Constable Driver Ramlal Bajya of Border Outpost Nalapara of 24th Battalion and Bijay Singh Basumatari, Parmeshwar Das, Intelligence Assistant etc. of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) Guwahati were involved.
