RARS distributes vaccines, medicine for pigs among farmers in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), North Lakhimpur, under Assam Agricultural University, distributed vaccine, medicine, vitamin and mineral mixtures of pig as the remedy for swine flu among farmers recently. One packet of these medicinal items was distributed to each of the farmers belonging to Scheduled Tribe living at Borbam Kachari, Gobindapur, Paharpur and Bogeepung areas under Dhemaji district under Promotion of Agriculture Centric Sustainable Livelihood Security for Tribal Farmers of Assam (STC, AAU: 2020-21) scheme.

On this occasion, a programme was organized at RARS, North Lakhimpur campus. In the programme, RARS Chief Scientist Dr. Prabal Kumar Saikia called upon the farmers concerned to provide the required vaccine, medicines and nutritious fodder to the pigs for much profit. Subject Matter Specialist (Veterinary Science) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Lakhimpur, Dr. Arindam Chakraborty took part in the programme as chief guest. He threw light on the right application of vaccine, medicine and the precautionary measures to be taken in this regard. He also elaborated the methods of caring the pigs along with the newborn piglets while addressing the farmers. On the other hand, scheme coordinator Dr. Nripen Kumar Gogoi told the farmers that they would be benefitted by rearing hybrid species of pigs.

RARS, North Lakhimpur conducted a two-day long training programme on scientific rearing on pigs among farmers on January 22 and January 23. Then the institution managed to build scientific pigsty for 25 farmers living at the mentioned four villages under Dhemaji and supplied them hybrid species of pigs like HDK-75, Hampshire and Yorkshire free of cost from Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, Joyhing and Jorhat Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Teok.
