Tezpur: Deputy Commissioner Manvendra Pratap Singh formally inaugurated the Rashtriya Poshan Maah in Sonitpur district by lighting the ceremonial lamp at a small function held at the District Library auditorium here on Tuesday.

The Deputy Commissioner in his inaugural speech highlighted the importance of overcoming the challenge of malnourishment in the country and called upon all the officials to put in concerted efforts and strive to achieve the goals as laid down by the UNDP as part of the Sustainable Development Goals to remove malnourishment from the country. The Deputy Commissioner also spoke about the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who started the Poshan Abhiyaan in 2018 with the aim to eradicate malnutrition from the country by 2022 and also spoke about the Prime Minister's recent 'Mann ki Baat' programme where he stressed creating awareness about nutrition among the citizens. He also said active participation of various stakeholders and convergence of similar schemes related to nutrition was the need of the hour which would go a long way in addressing the issue of malnutrition plaguing the country.

The month-long Rashtriya Poshan Maah, under the Poshan Abhiyaan flagship programme, is being implemented in the district simultaneously with the rest of the country. CEO, Zilla Parishad, Diganta Baishya, Divisional Programme Officer and i/c DSWO Samsera Hazarika, Additional Deputy Commissioner Liza Talukdar, Assistant Commissioner Shilpi Sikha Thakuria along with a number of Anganwadi workers, helpers, supervisors, CDPOs, heads of various government departments took part in the programme.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Liza Talukdar gave the welcome address while Divisional Programme Officer and i/c DSWO Samsera Hazarika spoke about the objectives of the programme. A pledge on nutrition was also administered to all present on the occasion. Later, a demonstration on how to identify Severely Acute Malnourished (SAM) children and ensuring adequate nutrition and care was also given by CDPO Ruby Kalita.
