Guwahati: Amid mounting speculation, Assam actor Jatin Bora has reiterated his support for the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Bora, in his statement today, said that he quit the party. He also said that the people of the state had been "misled" by the agitators.

Terming the agitation that rocked Assam at the fag end of 2019 as a "drama", Bora said."I joined the BJP in 2017 October. I did not understand politics; I had no designs of being an MP or Minister, but I have always wanted to contribute towards the artiste community of the state."

Bora, hailing the BJP for its contributions to the artiste community of Assam, said that he will return to his role as an active member of the party. "I was in the BJP, am in the BJP, and will continue to remain in the BJP", Bora asserted.

At one point, he even critiqued the anti-CAA "The CAA agitation destroyed the beautifully developing Guwahati. Even Sankardeva Kalashetra was also not spared", he said.

Back in the month of December, Jatin Bora resigned from the BJP as a mark of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

He also quit the post of chairperson of the state-run Assam State Film Finance Development Corporation at Latasil playground in the presence of a massive crowd which had gathered to protest against the contentious Act.

Bora, announcing his resignation, said he had joined the BJP with hopes of reviving the film industry in Assam and had no intention of becoming a political figure.

"Before an artiste or even an actor, I am an Assamese and I stand by my people in Assam. I oppose the CAB," he had said.

"Keeping in mind that our community is at stake, I formally resigned from the BJP as well from my post as the chairperson of the Assam State Film Finance Development Corporation. I thought that after the protests the government would withdraw the bill, but instead, it passed it. I was just a member of the party and I do not support everything it says. I oppose the CAB and I will keep on protesting against it," he said.
