SILCHAR: The festive season that begins with invocation to Goddess Durga virtually ends with Deepawali, also called festival of light. The fortunate has the pleasure to celebrate, but for poor and downtrodden, this is not so. Their plight has been worsened by the spell of COVID-19. Worst hit have been the people living on 'no man's land' beyond the Indo-Bangladesh barbed wire fencing. Some socio-religious organisations have stood by them in their economic crisis.

Radharaman Ashram, known for its humanitarian works, located at Baraoigram, 20 km from Karimganj, is one such shining name. The volunteers of the Ashram reached out to the villagers of Gobindapur beyond the fencing and distributed among them new clothes to bring smiles on their sulking faces. They showed this human gesture during the last Puja also and their Ashram will continue it for the people living in isolation and extreme hardship.

300 members of 50 families of the village were given sets of clothes to forget that they are uncared for. Tarun Choudhury, secretary of the managing committee of the Ashram said, "We run the Ashram and help the needy and poor. This is our dedication and commitment towards our spiritual Guru Prabhupada Radharaman Goswami." His inspiration gives us strength to do more and more social works. Chief convener Arup Roy said, "We always want to stand by the have-nots in the society with our limited means and people's support."

Bapan Namashudra, a resident of Sutarkandi Kurikhala GP, expressed his gratitude to Radharaman Ashram for helping the poor and helpless victims of partition who are yet to have any feel of Independence. Owing to their economic breakdown following the COVID-19 pandemic, the villagers could not celebrate Durga Puja. This has been offset by the kind offerings of Radharaman Ashram. Kaushik Ranjan Dey, Shikha Dey, Kartik Paul, Karuna Paul, Jhantu Saha and Gurdeep Singh, Assistant Commandant, BOP BSF were present on the occasion.
