Reception committee for indigenous games tournament formed in Udalguri district

KOKRAJHAR: A strong Reception Committee for holding the 12th Bodoland Indigenous Games Tournament was formed at Totalapara under Bhergaon subdivision in Udalguri district on Wednesday with Runal Daimary as chairman and Jiuswrang Boro as convener. The traditional games tournament is scheduled to be held with a three-day programme on November 26-November 28.

The reception committee was formed with Arobinda Boro as working chairman, Jwhwlao Boro and Pratab Basumatary as vice-chairman, Gwmsar Boro and Anjalu Boro as assistant conveners and Bimel Daimary as treasurer while Swmkwr Boro and Abongsha Boro were selected as publicity secretary and assistant publicity secretary respectively. The reception committee decided to form other sub-committees soon.

Talking to this reporter, the general secretary of Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA), Guno Sangkar Wary said the association had been organizing indigenous games tournament every year with an aim to preserve and revival of traditional sports of the Bodo being played by the people of the region since the ages of forefathers. He said that most of the traditional sports were becoming extinct for which the founder of BIGA, Chanakya Brahma formed the association to preserve and promote the indigenous games.

Wary said that BIGA had already identified as many as 55 indigenous games of which the association organizes tournaments for some feasible traditional sports while the rest are shown as demonstration to preserve them. He also said that the tournament was not confined to BTC districts but players from Sonitpur, Karbi Anglong, Goalpara and Biswanath also used to participate every year.
