Renowned artist Anup Hazarika passes away

Renowned sculptor, creator, painter and art director AnupHazarika passed away on Monday in Gauhati Medical College

TEZPUR: Renowned sculptor, creator, painter and art director AnupHazarika passed away on Monday in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). AnupHazarika, an inhabitant of TezpurChanmari area, was suffering from kidney-related ailments and was under treatment. The 51-year-old artist was fondly known as Baba.

AnupHazarika was an immensely talented artist, sculptor, creator and painter. Art was in his genes. He was the son of artist LambodarHazarika who was a nothing short of a legend in his own right. Anup was awarded the State award for best art director twice for SnehaBandhan and Antareen. He did art direction for many films like Mon, Dwaar, EmaanMorom Kiyo Lage, JuyePura Shun, Jatinga, Zanfhai-Junak and 6 Days of Creation..

He also worked in Doordarshan TV features like RasharajLaxminathBezbaruah, Maloti, Gandhi AahiAse and KangkanorPrithivi. He also served in the capacity of guest faculty of Scenic Design at the BhupenHazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute.

As an art director he offered his expertise in set designing in drama like KarengGhar, Dhaniramor Theatre, Dolls House, NimatiKoyna, JororuaProja, BanthaRamorBagan, KukurNesiyaManuh, Aahaar and Agnigarh. The reliefs at ChatrakarDewalaya, MangalchandiMandir, BhimaSangkarJyotirling and Ugra Tara Mandir (Guwahati) bear testimony to his meticulous and finely honed mastery of art.

Ban Theatre, Sonitpur Press Club, Bhoomi, Sonitpur Journalist Union, Jangam, TezpurXahityaXabha, JoymotiSangha, SonitpurSilpiSamaj, GrahanUdyanSamittee and hundreds of cultural activists, social workers, members of various cultural groups and organizations, local artistes and Tezpur MLA BrindabanGoswami paid floral tribute to him and also condoled his demise. His cremation took place at the Chanmari residence on Tuesday.

In his condolence message, renowned actor and director MridulChutia said AnupHazarika's contribution to the growth of Assamese society would be remembered for generations to come. "He was a versatile genius who had dedicated his entire life for art and culture. His death has created a huge void in the arena of culture. He was not only an artist but also a very amiable person and the contribution he has made in the field of art and culture is truly outstanding and unforgettable. I convey my sympathy to the bereaved family," said Chutia.
