Renowned musician Indreswar Sarma passes away in Jorhat

JORHAT: Indreswar Sarma (90) renowned musician of the State, passed away at his residence in Nehru Park of Jorhat town on Tuesday at around 1.20 pm.

Born in the Lohpohia area of Jorhat, he was awarded Badya Visharad from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow and was the first person from Assam to achieve it. He was a well-known violinist and table player. Sarma was the Principal of Jorhat Sangeet Vidyalaya since 1972, which is considered as the first music school in Assam. He was also the music teacher at the Postgraduate Training College, Jorhat.

Indreswar Sarma formed an orchestra and contributed immensely to the music field of the State. Several veteran musicians were trained under him. He also composed music for two of Dr Bhabendranath Saikia's films –Sandhyarag and Itihaas. He was honoured with Silpi pension in 1996 by the Government of Assam. He was popularly called 'Sangeet Pran' and the title was bestowed upon him in 1997 by the Government Pensioners' Association, Jorhat unit. In the year 2009, Assam Government bestowed Silpi Bota on him. He was also a celebrated radio artiste. His contribution in the field of classical music in the region will be remembered always.
