Kamakhya Prasad Sharma (86), a veteran academician, writer, retired Principal of Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School and Tezpur Government Girls’ Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School, and a resident of New Colony at Ward No 7, passed away in a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday morning following prolonged illness.

MANGALDAI: Kamakhya Prasad Sharma (86), a veteran academician, writer, retired Principal of Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School and Tezpur Government Girls' Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School, and a resident of New Colony at Ward No 7, passed away in a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday morning following prolonged illness.

Born to the family of religious village priest Lakkheswar Sarma and Padumi Devi of Kamargaon of Dergaon area in Golaghat district on April 1, 1936, Kamakhya Prasad Sarma studied in JB College in Jorhat and completed his Master's degree in Political Science and in English from Gauhati University. For a short stint, he rendered his service in the State Secretariat at Shillong-the capital of erstwhile undivided Assam. However, in 1957 he joined Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School as a Subject Teacher and in 1990 he joined Tezpur Government Girls' Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School and rendered his yeoman's service till his retirement in 1993.

In 1960, he tied the nuptial knot with Nirupama Sarma of Dibrugarh. Besides earning a prominent name for teaching, Sarma also wrote two Assamese novels, namely Naba Mallika and Swapna Bhongo. He also earned good reputation as a director and scriptwriter and was associated with several drama organizations. His death has been widely mourned in the greater Mangaldai area and a large number of well-wishers and family members rushed to his residence to offer their last respect, which included Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das, media persons Mayukh Goswami and Ganesh Dutta. He leaves behind his bereaved wife, two daughters and son Nayan Moni Sarma and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
