GUWAHATI: Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a widespread health concern affecting people globally, including India, with a higher prevalence in females, especially during pregnancy. UTIs are caused by various bacteria and can lead to severe health complications if left untreated. However, in many rural areas of India, UTI cases remain undetected due to a lack of adequate testing facilities, high costs, and time-consuming diagnostic processes.

Addressing this critical issue, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed a groundbreaking 3D printed device for rapid and cost-effective UTI diagnosis. This device offers a fast, accurate, and reliable method to measure and identify the type of bacteria responsible for the infection within a mere five minutes. In contrast, conventional detection methods, such as urine culture, typically take a minimum of two days to provide results.

The estimated cost of manufacturing the device is remarkably low, at just Rs 608, and conducting a sample test costs as little as Rs 8.
