Rich tribute paid to Abhinayacharyya Brajanath Sarma at Doomdooma

DOOMDOOMA: Rich tributes were paid to Abhinayacharyya Brajanath Sarma on his death anniversary at a commemorative meeting held at Doomdooma Natya Mandir on Sunday evening.

Incidentally, Brajanath Sarma's Kohinoor Opera staged the first ever co-acting in Assam on the stage of Doomdooma Natya Mandir way back in 1933. This revolutionary attempt of his to cast three women artists in the drama Moran Jiyari brought renaissance in the theatrical movement of Assam in the backdrop of the then conservative Assamese society as till then female roles were enacted by male actors.

Thus, Doomdooma Natya Mandir came to be reckoned with at par with other three famous theatre houses of Assam namely, Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir, Guwahati, Baan Theatre, Tezpur and Jorhat Theatre, Jorhat.

The programme got underway with lighting of the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of Brajanath Sarma by Dhiren Mazumder, president, Doomdooma Natya Mandir Samiti. Thereafter, floral tributes were paid by Arjun Baruah, president, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, Arup Jyoti Deka, secretary, Doomdooma Natya Mandir Samiti, and other dignitaries. Veteran actor Prafulla Mahanta addressed the gathering as chief guest. He dwelt on the contributions of Abhinayacharyya Sarma as an artiste and revolutionary and reminisced the memorable acting on the stage of the historic Natya Mandir where personalities like Natasurya Phani Sarma and Natya Samrat Chandra Chaudhury, too, played their glorious roles.
