DOOMDOOMA: Rich tribute was paid to the hallowed memory of Girish Chandra Borpatra Gohain, the long serving secretary of Asam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) on the occasion of his first death anniversary on Tuesday at ACKS, Doomdooma Branch office.

The three-storey building situated at Wood Road was renamed as 'GC Borpatra Gohain Bhavan' as a mark of respect to him. Borpatra Gohain, who was honoured with the title 'Mohan Sramik Neta Girish Chandra Borpatra Gohain' at the Tinsukia conference a few years back, was also made lifetime secretary of the ACKS, Doomdooma Branch.

Earlier in the morning, Md. Harishuj Jamal, president, ACKS central committee, inaugurated the newly-named building while vice-president Biren Adhyapak lit the lamp and secretary Rishabh Kalita paid tributes in front of the life-size portrait of Girish Chandra Borpatra Gohain. Later, a commemorative meeting was held under the president ship of Md Harishuj Jamal. Hitendra Baruah, secretary, ACKS, Doomdooma Branch, welcomed the guests. Central secretary Rishabh Kalita highlighted some of the major activities undertaken by Borpatra Gohain. Senior journalist and president of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha (TZXX), Arjun Baruah and Journalist Pensioner Dhiren Deka spoke about various aspects of the achievements of Borpatra Gohain in giving an impetus to the trade union movement in the tea gardens while vice-president Biren Adhyapak gave an account of the measures taken by Borpatra Gohain in construction of the ACKS building almost single-handedly - the foundation stone of which was laid by eminent Gandhian leader and freedom fighter Bijoy Ch Bhagawati and was later inaugurated by former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma during the golden jubilee celebration of ACKS at Doomdooma way back in 1998.
