LAKHIMPUR: A stretch of road, the construction of which was completed four months back in Dhakuakhana subdivision, has developed cracks and sunk due to the impact of the downpour. This incident has invited sharp reaction in the subdivision. Subsequently, the incident has also brought the engaged contractors under scanner once again with allegations of misappropriating the fund while implementing the construction of the road.

This road in question is the road from Saiguri to Lahibari under the subdivision. A fund of Rs. 508.57 lakh under Prime Minister Gram Sarak Yojana (PMGSY) with package No. 15263 was sanctioned for the construction of the road along with an RCC bridge. M/s Ganapati HAH Associates was engaged as contractor for the execution of the construction work under PWD State Road Division, Lakhimpur which was the implementing agency of the scheme. The construction work started on January 17, 2019 while it ended on January 16 of this year.

Significantly, the contractor had allegedly used poor quality materials in the construction of the road and misappropriated the fund. In this regard, though news were consecutively published and broadcast in media, the officers and engineers of the PWD allegedly were indifferent.

As a consequence, a portion of the road near Sapotiya Jan has developed cracks and sunk due to the impact of the recent week-long showers. People have alleged that the scheme was not implemented as per estimate and the sub-contractor was also involved in the misappropriation of the allotted fund for the scheme.

Meanwhile, the people of Dhakuakhana have demanded the Dhakuakhana subdivisional administration and Lakhimpur district administration to initiate due steps and disciplinary action against Ganapati HAH Associates regarding the issue and to make them reconstruct the damaged road without compromising on quality of work.
