Dibrugarh: In a bid to create awareness on road safety and all aspects of traffic rules, an elaborate programme on road safety and traffic awareness programme will be held at Dibrugarh Bengali High School auditorium on May 18 under the aegis of Sangeetam, one of the apex socio-cultural organizations of the town.

Active help and cooperation will be extended by the Dibrugarh DTO office for the event. On the occasion, an open prize money quiz and extempore speech competition on road safety and other related subjects will also be held among the participants in sync with the spirit of the event. Participation will be free of cost, and open to all. Such steps, intended to infuse traffic sense into the people, are the need of the hour with scores of vehicles owners violating traffic rules on a daily basis. Instances of riding without helmets to not wearing seatbelts have become too rife to be ignored. Moreover, with more and more two and three-wheelers hitting the roads, there seems to be a growing lack of awareness among the major chunk of the public regarding traffic rules. This lack of knowledge sometimes leads them to break the signal when the red light is on, or at other times, makes them go past the designated mark before stopping their vehicles at red light. That most of them are able to get away with their shenanigans due to lack of proper monitoring as well as enough punitive measures in place, only acts as a fillip for them.
