JORHAT: The Centre for Environment Education, Guwahati on Friday conducted a road safety awareness programme in six schools here in a bid to ensure a safe environment for children while going to and from school.
Centre for Environment Education (CEE) Ahmedabad was established as a Centre of Excellence under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, working in the field of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development and is supported by IIT and the State Home and Political departments. CEE is conducting the road safety awareness as per the Global Road Safety Partnership under Switzerland's International Red Cross Society that aims to reduce road-crash death and injury in low- and middle-income countries.
The five schools in which the programme was conducted were Balya Bhawan High School, Jorhat High Madrassa, the National Telegraph Girls' High School, the Lakhi Union High School, Jorhat Model Composite School and Royal Oak High School.
The students were made aware of the road safety measures by engaging them in wall paintings of the school, through an art competition and street plays. The Centre also placed temporary barricades in front of the schools so that traffic was regulated and the students remained secure behind the barricade. Transport department, Police department and district administration officials were also involved as resource persons.
A member of the Centre said that road safety measures should be initiated in children so that they grow up with the confidence that they can safeguard themselves on roads.
