Rongali Bihu celebrated at historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: Rongali Bihu was celebrated with colourful programmes under the aegis of All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU), in collaboration with the Brihattar Rangpur Rongali Bihu Celebration Committee on the first day of Bohag on Friday.

Rang Ghar was built by Ahom Swargadeo Pramatta Singha in 1746 and Swargadeo Rudra Singha started the tradition of celebrating the festival here. The tradition continued till the reign of the last Swargadeo Purandar Singha.

For the first time, an elephant race was organized by the celebration committee where five elephants namely Ranju, Shakuntala, Sundar, Rangmala and Jonali ran from Rang Ghar Chariali to Talatal Ghar.

After the elephant race, Alok Narayan Singha, great grandson of Ahom Swargadeo Purandar Singha, was present in the arena as a Symbolic Swargadeo. The entire atmosphere turned alive with cultural troupes belonging to various ethnic groups performing bihu husori, jeng bihu, ethnic dances etc. Among the various programmes, the celebration committee also provided financial assistance to 20 financially weaker students of Sivasagar. In addition to this, a number of dignitaries were felicitated at the bihu celebration venue by the organizers.
